Trump orders expansion of raids against migrants – in the Democrats’ “center of power”

Following the violent protests in California, the US President now wants to take even tougher action against immigrants in America's largest cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

US President Donald Trump has ordered intensified operations against migrants in Los Angeles and other cities. "We must expand efforts to detain and deport illegal immigrants in America's largest cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York," Trump declared on Sunday (local time) on his online service Truth Social. These cities, he said, are the "center of power" of the Democratic Party.

The tightened measures in Democratic strongholds are part of the "largest mass deportation program in history," the US President declared. He instructed officials at the US immigration authority ICE to do "everything in their power" to achieve this "very important goal."

Violent protests: Trump sent soldiers to Los Angeles

Trump won last year's presidential election, in part, on a promise to crack down on what he described as an "invasion" of undocumented immigrants. Since taking office, masked ICE agents have been arresting immigrants in raids across the country, and migrants have been flown out, some with their hands and feet shackled.

Protests against Trump's actions have erupted, and in some cases turned violent in Los Angeles a little over a week ago. The US president then deployed National Guard soldiers and Marines to the Californian metropolis against the wishes of local authorities.

ICE officers are "subjected to violence, harassment, and even threats every day from radical Democratic politicians," Trump claimed on Truth Social. "Nothing will stop us from accomplishing our mission." He accused Democrats of "seeking to destroy our inner cities."

ICE and other law enforcement officers must therefore focus on "crime-ridden" inner cities. He has instructed his entire administration to "deploy all possible resources to this effort and reverse the tide of mass-destruction migration." He added that immigration officials, police, and other agencies have his "unconditional support."
